Greetings from Juergen
Hi all,
I'm excited to share the latest edition of The Intersect with you. This time, we're getting into more thought-provoking articles about the societal impacts of art and tech, the role of AI in music and fashion, and even a bit of history with high-tech scans of old photo hoaxes.
I hope you find these stories as fascinating as I do. Whether it's exploring Amazon Music's new AI feature or understanding the collaborative nature of film production, my wish is that there's something here to spark your curiosity too, and maybe even inspire your next project.

High-Tech Scans Peer Inside Cameras From Famed 125-Year-Old Photo Hoax
Heritage scientists at the University of Bradford used advanced CT scanners to study the cameras linked to the famous Cottingley Fairies photos, as reported by Leslie Katz on Forbes. These early 20th-century images, which once captured the imaginations of many, including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, were revealed to be clever manipulations involving paper cutouts.
The application of high-tech scanning to these historical artifacts seems like an unexpected choice. It's amusing that what we now recognize as early special effects managed to go 'viral' using such simple means. The use of these sophisticated tools for this project feels somewhat disconnected from the aim of exploring the supernatural.
"I find it funny that early special effects going ‘viral’ came down to paper cutouts from children’s books."
While the fairies turned out to be a hoax, the fascination with their story persists in our digital age.
Film & Video
The Vital Role of Collaboration in Film and TV Production
Film and TV production thrive on collaboration, as highlighted by TechBullion's article. The piece elaborates on how diverse professionals, from scriptwriters to post-production experts, work in unison to create compelling content.
Filmmaking is inherently collaborative, unlike many other art forms. The synergy created by various talents working together is essential to the production's success. It’s the collective effort that brings a director's vision to life, making the final product richer and more nuanced.
"Filmmaking can be considered a collaborative art form that thrives on the synergy between creative minds."
It strikes me that technology, specifically tools like video collaboration software, have made this coordination even more seamless, ensuring everyone is aligned and contributing effectively.
Public Art
Street Artists Use Their Art to Express Their Feelings About Paris Olympics
Stroll through any Paris district and you’ll find colorful works of art on the walls of buildings. Don’t be mistaken; street art is not taken lightly. Street artists are using their talents to express feelings on pressing social issues, as highlighted in a recent article by USA Today News. This initiative, tied to the Paris 2024 Olympics, allows artists to voice their perspectives through public art, with the stipulation that these artworks will only be on display until the end of September, after which they will be removed and cleaned up.
I love the idea of event-based street art, particularly because it ensures that public spaces are kept clean and the art doesn’t get spoiled by the typical permanent graffiti added by others over time.
Australia’s Northern Territory Introduces New Immersive Indigenous Experience in Uluru
Australia's Northern Territory has launched Sunrise Journeys, a new immersive experience at Uluru, as reported by Travel Daily Media. This initiative aims to offer visitors a deeper connection to the region's Indigenous culture, though its implementation raises some pressing questions.
Reflecting on our recent visit to Uluru, the experience was visually stunning, yet left me questioning the authenticity and impact on the local Indigenous community. Despite the allure of the art exhibitions, there was a noticeable absence of direct interaction with Indigenous people. This disparity prompts concerns about who truly benefits from these ventures.
"As beautiful as these experiences appear, I'm really only happy if I see it making a difference for the Indigenous people themselves, and not just their representatives in tourism."
For me personally, there are broader implications of such initiatives and ensure they genuinely support the communities they feature.
Art and Spatial Computing
Old Time Stereographs Get New Photos
In a recent piece on Hackaday, we're taken back to the late 1800s with a look at stereographs, the original 3-D photographs. The article describes how a program was developed to transform modern 3D images into stereographs, using AI to bridge the gap between old and new technology.
Our take? This project is a nod to the enduring appeal of 3-D imaging. It brings a hands-on approach to experiencing depth in images, reminiscent of the tactile experiences lost in today's digital age. The application of AI here underlines how technology can revive vintage methods, offering both artists and tech enthusiasts an opportunity to explore creativity through historical lenses.
"3-D imaging. The old-school way."
I like projects like these for the potential in merging past innovations with present-day technology, creating fresh perspectives in artistic expression.
Societal Impact of Art and Tech
Is The Art World Obsessed With Making Us Feel Bad?
Maurizio Cattelan's latest exhibition at Gagosian, New York, continues to stir the pot of public opinion, blending stark imagery with controversial themes. His work, intricately playing with elements of shock and satire, underscores the darker aspects of human conditions such as gun violence and homelessness. Yet, amidst these provocations, Cattelan challenges viewers to engage more deeply with the uncomfortable truths of our society.
The intersection of art and technology often highlights negatives, dangers, and concerns. I frequently find myself wondering, "How can we be inspirational as artists?"
Exploring the boundary between art’s influence and viewer reception, Cattelan’s approach might be seen as a mirror reflecting our complexities. His audacious methods, including a golden-plated wall punctured by bullets and a figure mischievously positioned, provoke a dialogue on the aesthetics of discomfort. As noted by ARTnews, his art, while polarizing, captivates and holds the art world's attention, promising always to incite reaction, reflection, or even transformation. Through such bold expressions, Cattelan invites the art community to reflect on its role in shaping societal perspectives and emotional reactions.
Design
SIAN Design Generates Modern Fine Jewelry Using Algorithms
Architects Antonia Frey-Vorhammer and Simon Vorhammer of SIAN are transforming the jewelry design field by integrating algorithms and 3D modeling, as detailed in a fascinating piece by Design Milk. Their work stands out, combining architectural precision with artistic creativity, resulting in intricate and geometric jewelry pieces.
Our take on this process is one of admiration. The seamless workflow from initial algorithmic design to the final handcrafted piece is both innovative and inspiring. It highlights a unique fusion of technology and artistry, making each piece not just an accessory but a testament to modern craftsmanship.
"I like many of these pieces and find the process workflow from 3D design tools to utilizing algorithmic patterns to eventually creating wearables fascinating."
For anyone interested in how technology can redefine traditional crafts, SIAN’s approach offers a compelling glimpse into the future of design.
Fashion
AI’s Fashion Industry Impact Explored in ‘The Zebras,’ IFFM-Bound Indian Indie Film Secures U.S. Distribution (EXCLUSIVE)
“The Zebras: Dark Start,” an Indian indie film directed by Aneek Chaudhuri, delves into AI's influence on the fashion industry, as reported by Variety. The film, which weaves together the lives of a photographer, a documentarian, and a model, highlights the profound changes AI is bringing to the industry. It's set to premiere at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne before a U.S. release.
This film is a timely exploration of AI's impact on fashion, offering a fresh perspective on technology's role in creative fields. The filmmakers aim to spark critical conversations, and this aligns with our belief in examining how technology reshapes artistic expression. The dialogue it encourages is much needed in today's fast-evolving tech environment.
"From fashion photographers to models, the impact of AI on the fashion industry is already huge, especially abroad."
As Technology's impact on the arts, specifically AI, continues to expand in many industries, stories, movies, and conversations continue to shape our understanding.
Digital Archiving and Art Preservation
In Beatrice Glow's Art, Colonial Histories and AI Collide
Beatrice Glow’s exhibition at the New-York Historical Society is thoughtfully critiqued by Alice Procter in Hyperallergic. Glow's work, which includes both VR technologies and AI, revisits colonial histories through innovative art forms. However, the exhibition sometimes struggles with the weight of its subject matter, particularly in its use of AI.
While many artists, like Glow, feel the need to incorporate AI into their process, it's often more about the perception of staying relevant in a tech-driven world than about the technology itself. The buzz around AI can overshadow the actual message, creating a superficial layer that doesn't always add depth.
"The comparison between the almost-real weirdness of machine-generated images and the fantastical illustrations on early modern maps is self-consciously witty."
IMHO the intersection of technology and art should enhance storytelling, not dilute it. And as per Hyperallergic, the artist’s exhibition at the New-York Historical Society is clever, but it takes on a vast and messy past with a touch that is sometimes too light.
